● White cardstock 13 x 11 cm
● Pink cardstock 6 x 12 cm
● Red cardstock to cut hearts
● Pencil
● Eraser
● Ruler
● Scissors
● Glue stick
Step 1: Prepare Your Card Base
Begin by taking a piece of white cardstock and folding it neatly in half.
Make sure the edges are aligned, then press down firmly along the fold so the card sits flat. This gives you a clean, sturdy foundation to work on.
Step 2: Divide the Card into Sections
Using a ruler and pencil, measure and draw two vertical guide lines on the front of the folded card.
These lines should divide the card into three sections measuring:
● 4 cm
● 5 cm
● 4 cm
Next, at the top of the card, draw two diagonal lines, one on each side, angling inward toward the centre. These diagonal lines will become the bear’s arms, wrapping in for the big hug effect.
Step 3: Cut Along the Guide Lines
Carefully cut along the marked lines, following both the vertical section lines and the diagonal arm lines. Take your time here to keep the cuts clean and precise, as this will help the card open and close smoothly.
Step 4: Fold the Arms
Fold each arm inward so the edge of the arm lines up with the edge of the card body. This will create a diagonal fold at each top corner. Press firmly along the folds using your fingers or a popsicle stick to create sharp creases.
Step 5: Create the Pop-Out Hug
Open the arms back out so the card forms a “T” shape. Then carefully fold the card in half, tucking the arms inside. As you do this, the arms will naturally fold inward. When the card is opened again, the arms will pop out, creating the hugging effect.
Step 6: Illustrate the Bear and Add Your Message
Using the Ohuhu Ultra-Vibrant KalaLau Acrylic Markers, draw your bear on the centre section of the card. Start with simple shapes and block in the main colours first.
Once the base colours are dry, switch to the Ohuhu Fine Tip Acrylic Markers to add details such as facial features, fur texture, and the paws that align with the pop-out arms.
Finish by writing your Valentine’s message inside the card or on the front — something sweet like “Big Bear Hug” or a personal note. The fine tip pens are perfect for clean lettering and small details.
Step 7: Assemble the Card
Carefully fold the completed white pop-out card closed. Apply an even layer of glue to the back panel then the front one then place it inside the folded pink cardstock, aligning the edges neatly.
Press gently and allow it to dry fully before opening the card, ensuring the pop-out arms move freely inside.
Step 8: Decorate the Outer Card
Use your creativity to decorate the front of the pink cardstock. Cut out small hearts from red cardstock and arrange them around the card or near the bear’s arms to add a festive Valentine’s touch.
